Lazarus Chakwera concedes defeat in Malawi’s election

President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat following Malawi’s elections, acknowledges that he has been falling behind his immediately opponent, former president Peter Mutharika. During the National address President Lazarus Chakwera accepted the loss after the early Presidential results showed former president Peter Mutharika leading with approximately 66% of the votes compared to Chakwera’s who’s at 24%.  However, the final results are still pending the electoral commission is making sure accuracy is attained, the commission stated. BBC -Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has accepted that he lost last week’s election.

He was speaking in a national address. He has been trailing ex-President Peter Mutharika in the votes counted so far. Mutharika has got about 66% of the votes compared to Chakwera’s 24%.

Malawians are anxiously awaiting the final result as the election was held eight days ago. The election commission says it has taken its time to ensure the results are accurate.

Chakwera’s party had complained of “serious anomalies” during the counting process.
